Why Drains Slow Down Faster in Hard Water Towns
A slow drain is a narrowing pipe, and in a town running 6 to 17 grains per gallon the narrowing has help. Mineral scale gives everything else a surface to stick to.
Drain complaints are the most common plumbing call anywhere, and there is a local reason they arrive more often here than they do in a soft water town. It is worth understanding, because the fix that follows from understanding it is different from the fix people usually reach for.
The mechanism: scale gives everything a foothold
The Town of Queen Creek reports its groundwater supply between 6 and 17 grains per gallon. Above roughly seven, water is classed as hard, so much of the town sits well into that range.
Inside a drain line, dissolved calcium and magnesium deposit on the pipe wall over time, particularly where water sits or moves slowly. That deposit is thin, but it is rough, and a rough interior surface behaves completely differently from a smooth one. Grease that would have washed through a clean pipe catches on it. Soap scum bonds to it. Hair snags on it. Each layer gives the next one more surface to grip.
The result is that a line narrows progressively rather than blocking suddenly, which is why the honest description of most drain problems is not a blockage but a diameter that has been shrinking for years.
The four blockages, and why each behaves differently

That last row is the important one. If one fixture is slow, it is that fixture's branch. If several are slow at once, or if using the washing machine makes a floor drain gurgle, the problem is downstream of all of them and cabling a sink will do nothing at all. That situation needs a look inside the line rather than another attempt at the fixture.
Why chemical drain products make it worse
This is the part worth being firm about. Chemical drain openers are the most commonly used and least useful product in the category, and they cause damage in three distinct ways.
They generate heat, which stresses older pipe and can soften plastic. They rarely clear the blockage completely, instead opening a channel through it so the drain runs for a fortnight before returning, with the underlying accumulation untouched. And when they fail, caustic liquid sits in the line, so whoever opens that trap next is opening a pipe full of it.
On a property outside the sewer there is a fourth problem, because those chemicals reach the septic tank and damage the bacterial process the whole system depends on. Enzyme based maintenance products are a different category and are far more appropriate, though they are a maintenance measure rather than a solution to an existing blockage.
Cabling and jetting are different tools for different jobs
A drain machine, or cable, is a rotating spring fed down the line with a cutting head on the end. It is the right tool for a discrete obstruction: a hair mass, a root intrusion, an object. It punches through and clears the path.
What it does not do is clean the pipe wall. On a kitchen line that has been narrowing with grease and scale for a decade, a cable bores a hole through the accumulation and leaves the rest in place, which is why the problem returns on a predictable cycle.
Hydro jetting uses high pressure water through a nozzle that drives itself forward along the pipe while cutting the deposit off the wall, taking the bore back toward what it originally was. Against grease and scale it is exactly right. Against a pipe that is already cracked or coming apart it is exactly wrong, so on any line nobody has looked inside, the camera goes first.

What not to do to a drain, and what actually helps
- Keep grease out of the kitchen line entirely. Not less grease; none. It enters warm and liquid and sets solid further down.
- Fit hair catchers in showers and clean them weekly. This single habit eliminates most shower drain calls.
- Clean the bathroom sink stopper assembly properly a few times a year, since that is where the accumulation actually starts.
- Run hot water for a minute after washing up, which moves warm residue further along rather than leaving it to set in the trap.
- Treat the supply. Reducing hardness at the source removes the scale that gives everything else its foothold, which is a slower fix but the only one that addresses the mechanism.
- Stop using chemical openers, on sewer and emphatically on septic.
When it is not a drain problem at all
Two situations get misdiagnosed as drains regularly and cost people money in the process.
The first is a septic system approaching capacity. Slow drains throughout the house on a property with a tank are a system level signal rather than a line level one, and cabling the line achieves nothing. The second is a compromised lateral: a belly holding water, root intrusion, or a section that has settled and lost its fall. Those recur on a schedule no amount of cabling changes, and identifying them is what a lateral assessment is for.
The rule of thumb is simple. If clearing a line buys you six months and then the same thing happens again, the line has a condition rather than a blockage, and continuing to clear it is paying rent on a problem instead of solving it.
A note on the older half of town
Housing here divides fairly cleanly between the subdivision build out from the late 1990s onward and the older parcels that predate it, and drain behaviour differs between the two in ways worth knowing.
Newer homes generally have plastic waste lines throughout, which resist scale better than older materials and rarely suffer root intrusion because the joints are solvent welded. Their problems are almost entirely about what goes down them. Older properties, particularly those on acreage with long runs to a tank or a distant connection, are where root intrusion, settled sections and joint separation actually appear, and those need diagnosis rather than clearing.
If your house is on the older side and a line has needed attention more than once, the useful spend is on finding out what the pipe looks like inside rather than on a third clearing.
