Adding a Gas Line for an Outdoor Kitchen or Fire Pit

Outdoor gas is one of the better investments in this climate, and it is the area of residential plumbing with the least room for a shortcut. Both of those are worth taking seriously.

Read this part first

An odour of gas means people leave, immediately, before anything else happens. Touch no switches on the way out, in either direction, and make no calls until you are outdoors and well away from the building.

From there, the gas utility is the number to dial, or 911. They exist to make the site safe and they will come out to do it. A plumbing contractor comes afterwards, once it is safe, to put right whatever caused it.

Outdoor gas makes a great deal of sense in a climate where the patio is usable for most of the year. Outdoor kitchens, built in barbecues, fire pits, patio heaters, pool and spa heaters and standby generators are all common additions here, and they all start with the same conversation.

Why the load calculation decides everything else

Ask people what goes wrong with gas work and they say leaks. In practice the far more frequent defect is a line that is simply too small for what has been hung off it, and its symptoms are ones nobody connects to gas at all.

A spa that takes all evening to warm up. Burners on the range dropping noticeably the moment the heater in the garage kicks in. A standby generator that stumbles under load. A built in grill that felt impressive in the showroom and is oddly feeble at home. Every one of those can be a supply that cannot deliver.

The reason is that capacity is a property of the whole system rather than of the branch you are adding. Every appliance already connected counts toward the total, and so does the length of pipe, the number of fittings along it, and the pressure available at the meter. Adding one new outlet therefore rewrites the sums for everything else. That is why the right question at the start of the visit is what else you already run on gas, and why a quote produced without asking about the heater and the range has skipped the calculation that decides whether the finished job performs.

Buried runs, caliche and locating

Acreage properties frequently want gas somewhere the house is not: a guest building, a workshop, a barn. Putting a line in the ground brings a set of obligations that a run through a wall does not.

It has to be buried deep enough, in a material rated for being underground and protected against corrosion. It has to carry tracer wire, so that in fifteen years somebody with a locator can find it. And it has to be marked, so the next person with an excavator knows to slow down. Locates through Arizona 811 are requested first, always, with the caveat that the service flags utility owned infrastructure and not the private lines you or a previous owner put in.

Then there is the ground itself. Hardpan sitting a few feet down dictates what machine is needed and how long the trench takes, exactly as it does when a water service line has to be reached. If water is also going to that outbuilding, get both into the same excavation. Opening the ground once is markedly cheaper than opening it twice.

Natural gas or propane, and why it matters

You will find both around here. Propane turns up more often the further out you go, on parcels the natural gas network never reached.

Treating them as the same thing is a mistake. The two run at different pressures and the burner orifices differ, which means an appliance built for one has to be converted before it will work correctly on the other rather than merely plumbed in. Where a tank is involved, its position and the clearances around it come under their own separate set of rules.

Mention which fuel you have at the first conversation, because it changes the parts, the approach and sometimes the feasibility of what you are planning.

When to call the utility rather than us

  • Any hiss you can hear near pipework or where an appliance connects.
  • A strip of dead planting running in a straight line across the yard, with nothing else to explain it.
  • Bills climbing while the household is using the same amount as always.
  • Two or more appliances underperforming at the same time.
  • A pilot on an appliance that used to hold and now will not.

Any of them is reason enough to have the system pressure tested. It is a short, well defined and cheap procedure, and the alternative route to the same information is considerably worse. Where an actual smell is involved, the sequence at the top of this page applies and the utility goes first.

On doing it yourself

It is legal in Arizona for an owner to permit work on the single family home they live in, so this comes up, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a brush off.

The problem is not qualifications. It is that this particular trade hides its mistakes. A joint that is very nearly good, pipe one size under what the load needs, a missing plate where the run crosses a stud: all three look entirely normal and all three matter. Get water wrong and you find out within days because something is wet. Get gas wrong inside a wall or under a slab and there is no feedback at all until the day there is far too much of it.

Should you go ahead regardless, take out the permit and make sure the inspection happens. Nobody else is going to check the work, and skipping that step is the difference between an error somebody catches and an error sealed inside a wall.

What to expect on timeline

Expect a day or two of actual work for a normal patio run. What surrounds it is permit turnaround and inspector availability, and neither of those belongs to the contractor, so treat a quote that promises firm dates for them with some caution.

Two things stretch that out. The ground, where caliche can turn a straightforward trench into a slow one, and where an honest quote says so with a range rather than pretending to a flat figure. And the discovery that what is already installed cannot carry another appliance without being upsized first, which the load calculation should surface at quoting stage rather than mid job.

Ask for the timeline broken into physical work, permitting and inspection rather than as a single number. It makes it obvious which parts are within anyone's control.

Planning the outdoor kitchen around the gas, not after it

The most common sequencing mistake on patio projects is deciding the layout and the hardscaping first, then asking how gas will reach it.

Bring the gas run into the design conversation early. Where the line enters the patio, whether it can be routed before the slab or the pavers go down, how it will be protected where it emerges, and whether the same trench can carry water and electrical to the same structure are all decisions that are cheap at the planning stage and expensive afterwards.

The same applies to shutoff placement. A gas shutoff for an outdoor kitchen should be accessible without moving furniture or opening a cabinet under a hot appliance, and that is a decision made on a drawing rather than discovered at commissioning. Coordinating it alongside the water and waste work for the same structure is what keeps it to one dig and one schedule.
