Softener or Filter? Which One Your House Actually Needs
Softening and filtration are frequently sold as the same category and they are not. One protects your equipment. The other changes what comes out of the tap.
People arrive at this decision from two different directions. Some want the scale to stop destroying their appliances. Others want the water to taste better. Those are different problems with different equipment, and buying the wrong one is a common and expensive mistake.
Here is the distinction, and then the local specifics that determine what makes sense in a Queen Creek house.
What each one actually does
Softening removes calcium and magnesium through ion exchange. It stops scale forming in heaters and pipework, stops spotting, and makes soap work properly. It does nothing for taste, odour, chlorine or anything else dissolved in the water.
Filtration targets specific constituents. Sediment filtration removes particulate. Carbon filtration removes chlorine, along with the taste and odour that come with it. Reverse osmosis removes a very wide range of dissolved material and is normally installed at a single tap rather than for the whole house.
Neither replaces the other. A house with genuinely hard water and a chlorine taste complaint needs both, and there is no single unit that does one job well while also doing the other.

Reverse osmosis, and its trade offs
An osmosis system forces water against a membrane fine enough to turn back almost everything dissolved in it. Nothing else available to a household comes close for drinking and cooking water, and on supply as mineral heavy as ours you notice the change from the first glass.
It is not free of drawbacks, and they are worth hearing before anyone fits one. Production is slow, hence the little pressure vessel that lives in the cupboard. A portion of the water goes down the drain rather than to the tap. The membrane strips out the harmless minerals along with the rest, which bothers a minority of people. And there are cartridges and a membrane to buy on a repeating cycle, so it carries a running cost as well as a purchase price.
It is also worth being clear that it treats one tap. It does not protect the water heater, the washing machine or the shower, all of which remain on untreated water unless a softener is doing that job.

Order matters when you have several stages
Once a house has more than one piece of treatment equipment on it, the order they appear in makes a real difference, and plenty of installations have it backwards.
Grit gets taken out at the front, so that nothing behind it has to deal with particles. Carbon comes second, because pulling the chlorine out before water reaches resin makes that resin last longer. Softening follows those two. Anything by osmosis goes last of all, and at a single tap rather than across the whole supply.
Reverse that order and the cheap components are being shielded by the expensive ones, which is precisely the wrong way round. Houses where equipment accumulated over the years, fitted by whoever was available at the time, throw this up regularly during a maintenance visit.
What to do before you buy any treatment equipment
- Read your provider's published water quality report before anything else.
- Have hardness tested at your own tap rather than relying on a range.
- Decide whether the complaint is equipment damage or taste, since they need different answers.
- Be sceptical of any in home test that produces a dramatic result and a same day price.
- Ask what specifically a proposed unit removes, and check that against what is actually in your water.
- Confirm ongoing consumable costs and replacement intervals before buying, not after.
The pattern worth avoiding is the household that spends heavily on a point of use system for taste while the water heater continues scaling itself to death on untreated supply. In this town, the protective purchase generally comes before the pleasant one.
Whole house versus point of use
This distinction causes more confusion than the softening question, and it is worth being clear about.
Whole house treatment sits on the incoming line and treats everything: showers, laundry, dishwasher, water heater, every tap. That is where softening belongs, and where sediment and carbon filtration usually belong too, because the point of those is to protect equipment and to remove chlorine from the water you shower in as well as the water you drink.
Point of use treatment sits at one fixture, almost always the kitchen cold tap. That is where reverse osmosis belongs, because treating an entire household's water to that standard is expensive, slow and unnecessary when the great majority of it goes to washing rather than drinking.
The common mistake is buying a point of use system and expecting whole house benefits, then being disappointed that the shower still leaves spots on the glass and the water heater still scales.
Maintenance is the part that gets abandoned
Every filtration system has consumables, and a filter past its service life is not a neutral object. A saturated carbon filter stops removing what it was fitted to remove, and a heavily loaded sediment filter restricts flow and can become a place where material accumulates.
Sediment and carbon cartridges have replacement intervals stated by the manufacturer, and those intervals assume average loading. Reverse osmosis membranes last considerably longer than the pre filters around them, and replacing the membrane while ignoring the pre filters is the wrong way round.
Before buying anything, ask what the consumables cost annually and how often they are changed. That number is the difference between a system that keeps working and one that becomes an expensive fitting under the sink.
