Does a Water Softener Pay for Itself in Queen Creek?
The argument for treating the supply here is not about soft skin or better coffee. It is about how long the equipment downstream of it lasts, and that argument is a numerical one.

The sizing arithmetic, so you can check a quote
This is worth understanding because it lets you assess whether a proposal is serious.
You take the number of occupants, multiply by how much water each of them gets through in a day, then multiply again by the hardness figure. That gives the daily load in grains. The unit is then picked so that its capacity divided by that load produces a regeneration cycle at a sensible spacing, rather than one running every few hours or one running twice a month.
Of the two ways to get it wrong, too small is both more frequent and more harmful. A softener forced to cycle several times daily chews through its resin, burns salt and water out of all proportion to the household, and despite all that still lets untreated water through during the gaps. Too large costs more up front and leaves the bed standing idle between cycles, which creates its own set of complaints.
The check is simple: ask what hardness figure was used and where it came from. A quote produced without one is a quote produced without the calculation.

Only the fourth cause is genuinely terminal for the unit. Resin has a working life, and once the bed is exhausted it needs replacing. That arrives early on units that were undersized to begin with, and on any system fed chlorinated water with no carbon stage ahead of it.
The honest caveats
Softening is ion exchange. It removes calcium and magnesium and replaces them with a small amount of sodium, which is why some households prefer potassium chloride or keep one unsoftened tap for drinking and cooking.
It also does not improve taste, remove chlorine, or address anything else dissolved in the water. Those are filtration questions and they are answered with different equipment, frequently installed alongside a softener rather than instead of one.
And there is ongoing cost: salt, the water used during regeneration, and occasional service. The payback case has to carry that, which it generally does at this hardness level, but it is worth stating rather than glossing over. At the bottom of the published range the case is arguable; at the top of it, it is not close.
Salt, and the running cost people forget
A softener consumes salt and water every time it regenerates, and that is the ongoing cost line that should appear in any honest payback calculation.
How much depends on sizing and on how the unit initiates regeneration. A timer based unit regenerates on a fixed schedule whether the household used much water that week or not, which wastes both salt and water on a quiet week and can leave hard water reaching the house on a heavy one. A metered unit regenerates based on actual volume treated, which is more efficient and is what most current equipment does.
If you are comparing quotes, ask which type is proposed. A timer unit priced as though it were metered is the most common way this equipment is oversold, and the difference in running cost over a decade is not trivial.
What to do about the drinking water question
Softened water contains a small amount of added sodium, which is the consequence of the ion exchange process rather than a side effect that better equipment avoids. Most households find this irrelevant. Some do not, for reasons of taste or of specific dietary guidance.
There are two straightforward answers. Potassium chloride can be used in place of sodium chloride, which costs more per bag and works the same way. Or the kitchen cold tap can be left unsoftened, which many installations do as standard and which pairs naturally with a point of use filter at that tap.
It is worth deciding which you want before installation rather than after, since leaving a tap unsoftened is a pipework decision made at the time of fitting.
